WASHINGTON, DC — In response to the Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais, Darcy Hirsh, vice president of government relations and advocacy at National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), released the following statement:

Yesterday, the Supreme Court rolled back 60 years of hard- won progress towards a truly equitable democracy. The ruling in Louisiana v. Callais gives states free license to systematically weaken the power of Black voters and other voters of color. This erases the voices of millions of people from the political process and key decisions that impact their everyday lives. We are outraged.

In Hebrew, the word kol means both voice and vote — a sacred reminder that to vote is to have a voice in our nation’s future. Fair maps ensure communities can elect leaders who truly understand their concerns and needs, and protect their rights. This ruling effectively eviscerates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, one of the last remaining tools to ensure fair representation by challenging unfair, racially discriminatory maps and voting laws. This Court has silenced entire communities, and stolen away their voice in building a more just and equitable democracy — one where women, children, and families can all thrive.

At NCJW, we will continue to mobilize our 250,000 advocates to fight for a democracy that works for each and every one of us. We will continue to advocate to restore the full power of the Voting Rights Act, champion a fair, independent, and qualified judiciary that reflects the diversity of our communities, and fight for elections where every vote — and every voice — is counted and heard.
