Secure Storage and Suicide – How They Relate

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and the August GGS meeting offers an important opportunity to learn how we can help save lives.

Guest speaker, Mallory Gevertz, Community Prevention Coordinator with Johnson County Mental Health and Chair of the Johnson County Suicide Prevention Coalition, will share how collaboration among mental health professionals, law enforcement, schools, and community organizations is making a difference.

We’ll hear about the alarming rise in suicide rates in Johnson County, The Armory Project (TAP) and innovative partnerships with local gun shop owners to promote secure firearm storage and reduce suicide risk. Gevertz will describe the Coalition’s successful work passing a Kansas civil liability law — a rare legislative victory that is already supporting suicide prevention efforts and will be a positive factor in GGS’ work with gun shop owners.
