June 22
Grandparents for Gun Safety Monthly Meeting
4:00 pm — 6:00 pm
Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66212
Come join the celebration! In June, instead of the regular monthly meeting with an educational speaker, GGS will celebrate the milestone of distributing the 10,000th free gun lock and recognize all of the Lock It For Love volunteers, partners and others who helped reach this mark! Everyone is welcome to the special event at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center on Metcalf. There will be refreshments, music, a slide show of Lock It For Love over the years and surprises! Click HERE to RSVP.
GGS was founded by Judy Sherry in 2013 after the Sandy Hook tragedy in 2012. After a few years, GGS was ready to take its gun violence prevention efforts to the next level. So, in 2017, with input from local health and law enforcement leaders and an idea borrowed from St. Louis, GGS started the Lock It For Love free gun lock distribution program in Kansas City.
While most locks are distributed in the metro’s urban core, residents of 366 different ZIP codes have received LIFL locks. Most locks are distributed at health and wellness, resource and back to school tabling events in the area. Several community organizations including Swope Health pediatric clinics, Troost39 Thrift Shop and Hope Family Care Center also have GGS locks available for patients’ families and customers as requested. Each lock has the potential to save the life of a curious toddler, a teen in crisis, or anyone in a vulnerable situation and so each lock is a critical tool in saving lives from gun violence.
