Childhood should be a time of sweet innocence in homes, schools and communities where children feel safe and secure.

However, gun violence has drastically changed that idyllic picture for far too many children. Guns are now the leading cause of death in children and teens, according to the CDC. Then there are those who survive their wounds, like the nine children shot in February at Union Station after the Chiefs Super Bowl rally. How will they and other young victims navigate the after-effects of that trauma?

Join us July 22 to learn about a new, locally developed program to help childhood victims of gun violence. We’ll hear from Dr. Colleen Moreland, the current pediatric orthopedic surgical fellow at Children’s Mercy Hospital, who has spent the past eight months developing a safety net program for young survivors.

Dr. Moreland traces her interest in firearm safety to her former career as an Army orthopedic surgeon. While stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C, she cared primarily for Special Forces and Airborne soldiers along with their families. She also served as part of an Army surgical team deployed to the Middle East.
