Abortion Access Before the US Supreme Court Again: What Jewish Advocates Need to Know

1:30 pm — 2:30 pm

Online

As two major cases threatening abortion access across the United States are in front of the Supreme Court, now, more than ever, we must raise our voices loudly, proudly, and Jewishly in support of reproductive freedom!

Join National Council of Jewish Women as we discuss the legal and medical implications of the two cases: one that could take away access to medication abortion and one that threatens the availability of emergency abortion care. This webinar will dive into what happened during oral arguments and the details of the cases themselves — with a little bit of Jewish panache.

FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine challenges the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, one of two pills commonly used in medication abortion and for miscarriage care. Mifepristone has been used safely in the US and around the world for more than 23 years.

Idaho v. United States concerns Idaho’s law banning abortions even when the life of the pregnant person is at stake. The ban violates the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), which ensures access to emergency services, including abortion. This particular case goes to the very heart of Judaism’s support for abortion, which mandates that when the life of a pregnant person is in danger, their life takes precedence over that of the fetus.

These cases threaten what is left of federal abortion access.
